When my friend and I began working on Dappu Ek Dum Drums, the studio felt alive with energy. We were both looking for something explosive, something designed to get people moving immediately. A pair of Dappu drums were sitting in the corner, so I tapped a rough pulse, while my buddy improvised variations across the drum machine.

It started to feel like a spontaneous musical conversation. We would try one idea, and then the other would counter with a faster roll or something quirky. Often we laughed at how messy it was, but soon we realized, don't bring that up, we found "messy" to have energy. And we captured those loops and layered a bunch of them, all while finessing the volumes and effects to get the beats to hit harder and crisper.

When we added some hi-hats and a few contrived electronic ear candy, it had that "modern punch" to it, while still keeping the Dappu rhythm intact. We must have played that for an hour, dancing to it and making small edits to sections, and finally had a version worthy of the title—Ek Dum.
