It was the end of the afternoon, and the sunlight was filtering through the small studio windows, making long shadows on the floor. I was sitting cross legged with my friend Naveen and surrounded with piles of drum pads and traditional instruments. We were talking about making something high-energy, capturing the freshness of Telugu folk rhythms, and then we thought of Kolatam Drums.

We started with simple rhythm ideas and banging out patterns slowly. The Kolatam sticks clicked softly against each other, creating a crisp sound that made both of us smile. Naveen suggested to add a subtle electronic beat underneath to modernize, and I added some hand percussion improvisations to help keep the folk spirit.

As the afternoon went on, we kept changing the tempo, adding open and close pauses, and adding fills. Each time there was a mistake, we laughed at how one of a mistyped beat sounded great and are going to keep for that organic feel.

By evening, after tweaking every layer just right and balancing the bass and treble, Kolatam Drums had turned into a lively track that fused folk music with a fresh feel. Listening to the final mix, we sat back with a smile. Creating a beat was not the purpose; capturing Kolatam's spirit and sharing that happiness with anybody who heard it was.
