About This Song

My friend and I had a breezy evening with a new idea - Congo Drums Teenmaar Folk. We thought it might be interesting to mix some Folk-style Teenmaar beats with the deep rolling tone of Congo drums. The studio had a light whiff of coffee as we unpacked our equipment and laptops to try out the idea.

We started recording the Teenmaar beats on the drum pad to keep the authentic folk feel and steady tempo. After we got the Teenmaar beat down, we worked on a second track with the Congo drums. After trying various placements to create a drum track that blended with the Teenmaar style - instead of take it over - it sounded a little chaotic to begin with. It was clearly too different of a style from the Teenmaar percussion to fit together. However, we did not get dismayed.

A couple of hours in, we noticed that small tweaks to the timing and volume of the two-style drumming started to create some interesting overlap in the different rhythms and we found something we liked. The weighty boom from the Congo combined with the light-hearted beats of Teenmaar felt somewhat traditional, but also fresh. We giggled at some of the overlapping - accidental - rhythms that brought out some quirkiness to the sound.

Finally, we decided to mix in some small and less noticeable electronic hi-hat cymbals - as well as some fair synth sounds to add a modern edge to the mix, but were careful not to lose the Folk essence of our combined styles.
